UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHER Chuck Harvey
Aloha I am Chuck Harvey. I come from a small town in the high desert of Arizona. My
first real taste of the ocean was when I moved to Hawaii in 1997. Upon arrival I had found a job
in the tourism business working on a boat as a Japanese/English guide and underwater
videographer (among other things). Since 1998 I have been primarily involved in the
development and education of Hawaii's tourists to the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin and other
ocean life on the Waianae Coast (west side of Oahu). Through this education I have personally
learned many of the habits, behaviors, and a good sense of how a lot these wonderful sea
creatures react (or ignore) certain situations.
At the end of 2003 I was presented with an opportunity to put this education to the test.
So I embarked on this new challenge trying to document and capture the beauty above and
below the oceans surface. This ongoing education finds new challenges and discoveries for me
everyday.
I feel that my being at the right place at the right time can give you a window into the
many amazing moments that I have been witness to. I hope in some way you feel that you were
there too. Because of the nature of my business I do not have much time to "enhance" my
pictures. When I take a picture underwater there is a tint (even though my eyes see one thing,
the camera sees it slightly different) that I take out and in doing so the picture returns to what I
have seen underwater. I also like the sepia medium. I feel that the picture is good enough but
the color just is not there, so I find sepia makes it work for me.
Enjoy!
Chuck
